Young Animals

When we were young
spirit was cheap
We drank each other
or sank teeth
into our own arms and sucked on
pain joy
words and music released
in the obscene torrent of youth
riches of the world
comfortable second skin
It was all we knew – the cheapest
way to travel
We couldn’t wait
to get out
of our small towns
out of our small lives
One day when I grow up
was the opening of every tale told
or imagined

Grow up we did
into our small lives
Many returned to
their small towns

Now as then
we live in the zoo
